Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), officially known as Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia,” stands as a vital international gateway serving Thessaloniki, the dynamic second-largest city in Greece. In the year 2023, the airport welcomed a total of 7,029,957 passengers, showcasing its pivotal role in connecting the region to the rest of the world.
Ranked as the third-largest airport in Greece, following Athens International Airport and Heraklion International Airport, SKG has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1930. Over the years, it has consistently ranked among the busiest airports in Greece, boasting a significant volume of both flights and passengers. In fact, it held the distinction of being the second-busiest airport in terms of flights served and the third busiest in terms of passenger traffic, with over 6 million travelers passing through its gates.
As the primary airport serving Northern Greece, Thessaloniki Airport plays a crucial role in facilitating travel not only to and from the city of Thessaloniki but also to the renowned tourist destination of Chalkidiki and the surrounding cities of Macedonia. Notably, the Athens–Thessaloniki route ranks as the tenth busiest in the EU, catering to a staggering 1.8 million passengers annually.
To meet the growing demand and ensure optimal passenger experience, a second terminal was constructed in collaboration with Fraport, officially opening its doors in 2021. This expansion reflects the airport’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and capacity to accommodate the evolving needs of travelers.
